I Think You Could Do This!
Could You See Yourself Giving Smiles Across Cusco?
Dr. Drew embarked on consecutive volunteer trips with Globe Aware in South America. His first destination was Peru, where he spent a week touring multiple schools near Cusco. During his visit, he focused on advocating dental hygiene and providing assistance and donations to children in rural schools. This impactful effort was made possible by the dedicated support of Globe Aware coordinator Rocio and helper Henry. Their collaboration ensured direct access to health services, a critical asset for rural communities facing challenges in accessing such vital services.
During his stay, he immersed himself in the local culture, attended shows, relished home-cooked meals, engaged with children in classroom settings and playgrounds, and, of course, embarked on a visit to the magnificent Machu Picchu.

A Diary of the Galapagos
After Peru, Dr. Drew dedicated two weeks to Isabela Island in the Galapagos. While this program demanded some significant adjustments, Dr. Drew was a superstar who took everything in stride! His volunteer efforts focused on monitoring green sea turtle nests, eliminating invasive plants that disrupt turtle nesting and migration, and even contributing time to the tortoise conservation center. Here's an excerpt from what he learned during his time there:
"The Green Sea Turtle nest this morning. You can see all their tracks leaving the nest. The flat parts are their shells flattening the sand. Their front flippers make the marks as they drag themselves along toward the ocean. If they hatch at night, they have the benefit of the moonlight and no predators. In the daylight, they face birds along the way. This one, and 99 of his siblings, made it to the ocean last night around 10 pm. Despite nearly 100 in each nest, it is estimated that only 0.10% make it to adulthood. They face many predators along the way. Yes. It’s been a bit of a surprise to me, too. But I’m enjoying it. My co-volunteers are wonderful."
During Dr. Drew's two weeks in the Galapagos, he also had the opportunity to swim alongside the enormous native Green Sea Turtles.
"That's me behind a large Green Sea Turtle. We saw two dozen turtles snorkelling yesterday. Some were 5 feet long AND 5 feet wide, in two dimensions, weighing 400 pounds each. They happily munch on the seagrass and moss that grow all over!"

Here's a reminder of what the experience was like for two volunteers last year:
"The opportunity to meet and interact with local people was amazing. Most of all, not just driving by the animals, but being down in the pan with them, listening to them interact with each other - was an experience that cannot be explained in words. To see the elephant families greet each other, to watch them touch, hear them trumpet, and experience their joy at meeting at the waterhole is a lifetime experience." - Jeffrey Burtner.
“It's a great opportunity to be more than a tourist in an exotic setting. The best part was being in an African National Park all night." - Bruce Smerch.

A Perfect Family Destination
Globe Aware had multiple families enjoy their spring breaks in Costa Rica! Why not think of this stunningly nature-filled destination as the perfect graduation trip for yourself or a loved one?
Here's what one parent had to say about their week in the Orosi Vallery:
"This was the single most meaningful trip we’ve been on as a family. The cultural immersion was incredible; spending time with Federico, Paco, Mama Luz and their beautiful and kind family was one of the highlights of our lives. Everyone was so warm and inviting. Federico is a gem. We truly felt like this was an authentic intro to how people in Costa Rica live. You never get this kind of experience as a tourist! And the service project was sized appropriately for our family’s time and (limited!) skills. Gustavo was a wonderful guide for how to complete our work, and we felt proud of our completed project. It was great to learn how the people of La Flor are using the community center that Globe Aware built for meaningful uses. I sincerely hope we can return and keep the momentum going in this community.
We had a good amount of leisure time to explore the town, zip line, rock climb, and go to the hot springs. The balance was great!
The food in the restaurants was good, but the food in people’s homes was PHENOMENAL! Delicious, prepared with skilled hands and love. Mama Luz gave us a masterclass in making empanadas. I want them to make a cookbook. Eating in people’s homes made us feel like part of their family. We were able to talk with them and learn so much about how they live. Our kids loved learning about how different the school system is in Costa Rica compared to the US. Our kids as well, especially our high schooler, Ishaan. He was so moved by the trip and is thinking about how and when he could do a similar one with a few of his school friends on their own. That was truly a unique part of the trip. Unforgettable and meaningful time with the kindest people." - Prabha Kannan.
