When A One Week Volunteer Vacation Inspires a Year of GivingOn a recent trip to Ghana with Globe Aware, volunteer Laney Lyons worked extensively with children in the local school. While she expected to encounter poverty during her stay, she was unprepared to witness first-hand the amount of children who come to school hungry… and leave school hungry. Her experience has motivated a call to action to help these children:“This sweet boy broke my heart today. He got caught trying to steal food and we found out it's because he hasn't eaten all day, possibly for two days, and had no money for lunch and no food at home. Then in attempting to pay for his lunch (equivalent of about 20 cents in US dollar) I find out there are 24 kids at the school with no lunch. I paid for lunch for them all for the rest of the week...now looking for a way to continue making sure these kids at least have lunch at school. You see the poverty but it was the first specific time I've seen a child and knew they were hungry and had no food. My heart will never be the same.” And so was born, THE GHANA LUNCH BOX PROJECT $11.00 is all it takes to ensure a child will have a lunch to eat along with their school mates each school day! Why is lunch important? Children need—and deserve—a meal at school so they won't be hungry while trying to learn AND it helps kids grow up physically healthy, mentally alert, and capable of meeting the challenges of adulthood in the 21st century. Just think...... $11 a month can feed a child ALL YEAR. We want you to join us as part of our mission to make sure that we can help the 200 kindergartners eat lunch.
